Because Georgetown is federally recognized by the United States of American, the Native Village had to adopt a governing constitution. Under this governing constitution, the Georgetown Tribal Council is the governing body. The Council is made up of 5 elected members over the age of 18 who are members of the Native Village of Georgetown. The Council holds quarterly meetings to conduct business on behalf of Georgetown members.

There is also an annual meeting held each year where Georgetown members over the age of 18 vote to elect new Council members whose seats are up for re-election. To provide consistency within the Council, terms are staggered so that only two seats are up for re-election each year.

To become a member of the Native Village of Georgetown, one must be either born to or adopted by a member of the Tribe. Therefore, those people seeking to become members of the Tribe must go through the enrollment process conducted annually by the Council. An enrollment committee appointed by the Council reviews all applications to verify that enrollees are eligible for membership. For information regarding Georgetown’s enrollment process, please refer to the Enrollment Services page.
