Position Title: Child Welfare (ICWA) Worker
Reports To: Tribal Executive Director
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Compensation: $30.00 per hour
Location: In-person (Anchorage) or remote in Alaska
Employment Term: This position is grant-funded and currently guaranteed for 30 hours per month for six (6) months. The position will focus on ICWA case management, required training, and program organization. The Tribe is actively seeking additional funding to expand this role into a full-time position. Continued employment is dependent on funding availability and program needs.
Position Summary: The Child Welfare Worker is responsible for carrying out the provisions of the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) to protect the best interests of Native children and support the stability of tribal families.
This position provides case management and advocacy services for tribal children and families involved with the child welfare system, while also supporting the development of foundational ICWA program infrastructure. Case management and ICWA compliance responsibilities take priority in this role.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
ICWA Case Management (Priority)
· Provide ICWA case management services for tribal children and families, including ongoing contact with children, parents, placements, and involved parties
· Participate in case planning and coordinate services with child welfare agencies, including the Office of Children’s Services (OCS)
· Respond to ICWA notices and ensure compliance with all applicable timelines and legal requirements
· Prepare and submit documentation for court proceedings and attend hearings and case-related meetings as required
· Coordinate and communicate with legal representatives, courts, and service providers to support case progress
· Advocate for the rights and best interests of tribal children and families in all case-related matters
· Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential case documentation
Program Organization & Infrastructure Development
Assist in organizing the Tribe’s ICWA program structure
Develop basic systems for case tracking, documentation, and communication
Support implementation of ICWA policies and procedures
Participate in building relationships with partner agencies
Training & Professional Development
Participate in ICWA and child welfare training
Work with technical assistance providers, including the Alaska Native Justice Center
Maintain knowledge of ICWA laws, regulations, and best practices
Prevention & Community Support
Assist with community outreach and prevention activities as capacity allows
Provide referrals and connect families to supportive services
Documentation & Confidentiality
Maintain accurate, organized, and secure client case files
Ensure strict confidentiality of all client information
Follow all tribal, state, and federal requirements

Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED (Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree preferred)
Experience working with children, families, or social services
Knowledge of ICWA or willingness to complete training
Ability to work with courts, agencies, and tribal communities
Additional Requirements
Must pass criminal background check (no history of child abuse, domestic violence, or sexual offenses)
Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries
Valid driver’s license (if applicable)
